Classic rock groups of the 1960s and 1970s were Danny Maxwell's earliest musical influence. He says, "Seeing the Beatles, in their first American appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show that Sunday night in 1964 was more than an eleven year old kid could handle. I became addicted to the new age of rock and roll," he says, "Then came the Rolling Stones, the Doors, Cream, Buffalo Springfield, Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Santana, Sly and the Family Stone, Ten Years After, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Marley, Steely Dan, The Who, Aerosmith, the Eagles, ZZ Top, Grand Funk Railroad, these are just of few of the great rock bands that fed my addiction." His first experimentation was with the guitar, on the melodic rhythms that gave him a good feeling. But other things took precedence-- military service, marriage, a daughter, a job, college, a profession. And all this while, he was developing a sophisticated knowledge of music until, in 1983, he and his wife Cynthia moved to Tahlequah, Oklahoma which has a great music scene. He recalls, "We became friends with many talented musicians and artists in this area of Northeastern Oklahoma. This part of the state is blessed with so many great musicians. There is always music being played somewhere in the surrounding hills of Tahlequah." His music evolved over ten years, from shaking an egg around the campfire with his close personal friends Leon Briggs, Les Carter, and Donnie Duree. He collected (and mastered) other rhythmic tools such as tambourines, cabassas, maracas, claves, and other shaker devices with which he became proficient at providing a background metronome rhythm that drives the fluency of the music, complimenting almost any music or musician. Danny's versatility and solid consistency is a welcomed asset to the many bands that he has played with-- Randy Crouch and the Flying Horse Band, Barney Ingram and the Medicine Pony Band, Robert Combs, The Ganja Kings, Rick Holderbee and the Saturday Night Band, Leon Briggs, Donnie Duree, The Psycho Magnets, Easy Money, Niecey and Joel Finch and Debbie Duvall Trio, and many others. "I recently turned my attention to hand drums, congas and bongos in order to expand my proficiency in delivering a latin background sound for the musicians that I play with," he says. Danny's musical skills are just the tip of the iceberg. He is also an accomplished artist and a craftsman in the mediums of glass, wood, beadwork, graphic design, and painting. |
