Upcoming Gigs: Don't Miss This One: March 24, 25, 26 2006: Save the Illinois River Songwriter's Showcase Music Fundraiser at Kooter Brown's Music Tavern, on Hwy 100 between Lake Tenkiller and Stilwell at Barber, Oklahoma. 3 nights of great original live music by some of the best musicians in this talented region! Invited musicians also include Randy Crouch, Eddie Glenn, My Tea Kind, Joe Baxter, Rick Holderbee and the Saturday Nite Band, Ray Moore, Blues Man Donnie DuRee, Leon Briggs, Red Dirt roadster Bill Erickson and more, more, more! Kooter's is a well-kept secret gathering place for national-quality musicians who'd just rather live in the hills than hassle with working on the road. At Kooter's, musicians gather and jam on stage, or jam acoustic out back if the fire ban is over. Often, on Sunday Afternoon, someone like Tulsa's great Robert Combs will drop in to jam, stress-free with the assorted variety of musicians who show up. It's like Winfield, except the beer is ice-cold and Dave Holbrook keeps a big pot of free food (chili? hot dogs? burgers?) stocked, and you can play free pool or chess with a master (DJ Johnson) while you listen. And it happens all the time! For this STIR weekend-long event, attendees can rent a modest room at Caney Ridge or Carter's Landing (or a great room at Tenkiller Lodge in Keys) and enjoy 3 days of awesome talent, up close and personal in this casual, laid back informal folksey and comfortable bar setting. Michael Burris of N'Tune Entertainment in Tahlequah Oklahoma and Kooter Brown's Music Tavern are the main sponsors of this event, to raise money for STIR's battle to preserve and protect the Illinois River and Barron Fork Creek. If you attend the Woody Guthrie Festival, and hang out in the campgrounds, you'll be right at home among friends and maybe even some folks you know. Bring friends. Visit STIR at www.illinoisriver.org and sign the Action Alert, and join STIR. August 20- (Saturday Afternoon) The Holistix appeared before many of the estimated crowd of 400 at Balloonfest on Saturday Afternoon, August 20th. Intermittent rain was both a deterrent for attendance, and also a draw to the music tent. The crowd enjoyed the music. We should have some pictures posted in the Music GigPics section soon. Rick Holderbee and the Saturday Night Band followed, with Percussionist Danny Maxwell sitting in, along with Dave Holbrook on Mandolin and Kathy Tibbits on the rasp for some of the songs. Later on, Pumpkin Hollow Boys played to finish off the show. They sure have a following! After the gig, Holistix bassist Brent Parrott and Percussionist Danny Maxwell along with lead voaclist Dennis Tibbits showed up for an impromptu round of music on Saturday Night out at Kooter Brown's-- a favorite retreat for musicians. Read the Kooter Chronicle in the music section for more. Balloonfest is always a favorite gig. Oklahoma Wildlife's Niecey and Debbie said this was their 14th appearance, and we believe them if their sweet sister harmonies are any clue. Because thunderclouds loomed, Oklahoma Wildlife went acoustic but never missed a thing as the happy crowd at Balloonfest didn't go home-- despite heat and rain and swelter and looming winds and eventually damp cold. Special thanks to a very special man-- Michael Burris who is right up there at the top of the list of folks who have created the local music scene around Tahlequah. The entertainment program was superb, and accomodations for the musicians were among the best to be found in Green Country. Thanks, Michael Burris and N'Tune Music of Tahlequah for making Balloonfest an enjoyable variety blend of talented musicians that will hold a crowd thru about the most odd weather we've seen all in one day. Thanks also to Hank Chitty, who has been mixing sound for for 20 years-- Hank's mixing is purely pro. Another of the great groups who played early on at Balloonfest was the duo of Pat Moss and Harold Aldridge. If you have not heard this Blues duo, don't miss them. You will find songs that make you laugh and songs that make you cry. We don't see that many steel front guitar players in these parts but Pat Moss can whupp it out, and Harold can make that slide guitar talk!
